Newa Ekta Diwas (Newa Unity Day) being marked today
Newa Ekta Diwas (Newa Unity Day) is being celebrated today by organizing different activities in Kipu (Kirtipur), an ancient Newar town 5 km southwest of Kathmandu. The day marks public declaration of Newar autonomous province in Kathmandu’s Dashrath Stadium through Newa Swayatta Rajya Manka Sangharsha Samiti in a large-scale event participated by hundreds of thousands of Newar and other people three years ago on today’s date – Pohelathwa Nawami, 1129 Nepal Sambat.
Newa Swayatta Rajya Manka Sangharsha Samiti is a joint struggle committee of different political and social bodies representing Newar community striving to establish ethnic-identity based Newar autonomous province in historical Nepalmandal territories. It includes Newar fronts or organizations affiliated to major political parties such as Newa Rastriya Mukti Morcha affiliated to UCPN-Maoist, Newa Loktantrik Sangh , and social organizations like Newa Dey Daboo (Newar National Forum), Jyapu Samaj, Jyapu Mahaguthi, Newa Jagaran Manch and Nepal Boudha Bihar Sangh, among others.
The Joint Committee is organizing the celebrations at Kipu (Kirtipur) in coordination of Newa Swayatta Rajya Manka Parishad Kirtipur that include mass rallies comprising of cultural processions from Kathmandu to Kirtipur and special public conference at Nagaa’n Dobaa (Nagaun Dobato) in the town.
